Last week the remake of Star Wars – Episode I came back to the movies in 3D and entered the movie charts at position four. But is it worth watching, or is it just George Lucas exploiting the franchise?
One could say that a 3D remake of Star Wars has to be a firework of 3D effects. But this is not the case. When the movie was shot in the first place George Lucas created a 3D feeling. To conserve this feeling the remake takes use of spatial depths and abdicates items in the foreground.
Of course, the 3D remake of a 2D movie doesn’t have the quality of Avatar, but Star Wars – Episode I only presents a few third dimension moments and doesn’t use the full potential that was given. The spatial depth is barely noticeable and scenes that clearly have potential for a great 3D moment aren’t used. An example for this is the final battle in space.
It could be the only reason for fans of Star Wars to watch Episode I at the movies to get back to the feeling of watching it on a big screen like 1999. But to pay more to watch it in the third dimension is not worth it.

Peter Jackson, the critically acclaimed director sets out to deliver their fourth installment of Tolkien’s epic Lord of the Rings franchise, with the making of the Tolkien’s classic story The Hobbit.
The Hobbit, takes us back to the lands of Middle Earth and follow Bilbo Baggins (Frodo’s uncle and the shire’s original owner of “The one ring to rule them all”) on his epic journey with a group of dwarves, set to reclaim a stolen treasure of theirs from the dragon Smaug. The movie will bring back familiar faces, such as Gandalf the grey; who acts just as he did in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as the main antagonist in convincing the “non adventure” orientated hobbit Bilbo to pursue adventure and explore the realms beyond the shire.
The movie is once again filmed in the majestic country of New Zealand, which offers the expansive and dynamic environment that takes the viewer through a breathtaking journey through endless fields, spine tingling forests and spectacular mountains capes. New developments in filming will be used to provide a greater viewing experience, such as the effort to film using 48 frames per second instead of the industry average of 24, this statement was released on their Facebook page, “We are indeed shooting at the higher frame rate. The key thing to understand is that this process requires both shooting and projecting at 48 frames/s, rather than the usual 24 frames/s (The great majority of films have been shot at 24 frames per second since the late 1920s). So the result looks like normal speed, but the image has hugely enhanced clarity and smoothness. Looking at 24 frames every second may seem ok–and we’ve all seen thousands of films like this over the last 90 years–but there is often quite a lot of blur in each frame, during fast movements and if the camera is moving around quickly, the image can judder or “strobe.” Shooting and projecting at 48 frames/s does a lot to get rid of these issues. It looks much more lifelike and it is much easier to watch, especially in 3-D.”
The film is due for release in The Netherlands come the 13th of December 2012.
